T.G.F.D.
Bluff Park Elementary is an active participant in the Too Good For Drugs program. Officer Chad Godsey of the Hoover City Police is the coordinator and facilitator for the Bluff Park T.G.F.D. curriculum (as well as serving at all nine other Hoover Elementary schools). T.G.F.D. is a drug abuse prevention education program designed to equip elementary, middle, and high school children with knowledge about drug abuse, the consequences of abuse, and skills for resisting peer pressure to experiment with drugs, alcohol and tobacco.
The key element to the T.G.F.D. program is the cooperative effort by the police, schools, parents, and the community.
T.G.F.D. lesson plans focus on four major areas:
1. Providing accurate information about drugs, alcohol and tobacco. 2. Teaching students good decision-making skills. 3. Showing students how to recognize and resist peer pressure. 4. Giving students ideas for positive alternatives to drug use.
The T.G.F.D. curriculum is part of the curriculum for all fifth grade students in the Hoover City Schools system. Bluff Park begins T.G.F.D. classes after the winter holiday break. Classes are 45 minutes in length, once per week for nine weeks. Officer Godsey also coordinates an internet safety program called ISafe, where students learn how to be responsible and safe “cyber citizens”. ISafe consists of two lessons, usually presented at the beginning of the school year.
Officer Godsey also visits the lower grades, on a more informal basis, to speak with students about safety at home and in the community.
Officer Godsey has been in law enforcement for 19 years- with this being his seventh year as a T.G.F.D. instructor.
"In all my years of police work, I truly have found no better assignment than that of T.G.F.D. instructor."
