(HOOVER CITY SCHOOLS) – Five deserving educators received surprise visits today from district leadership as Hoover Teachers of the Year and Jacksonville State Teacher Hall of Fame honorees were recognized.
Among the honorees: Madge Gregg (Business Education, Hoover High) and Averee Patton (Kindergarten, Riverchase) for Hoover City Schools’ Teachers of the Year (Elementary & Secondary); Paige Hutchinson (Special Education, Hoover High), Anita Israel (Special Education, Simmons) and Ellen Stubblefield (First Grade, Gwin) as district nominees for the Jacksonville State University Teacher Hall of Fame.
“It is the most prestigious honor a teacher can receive in Hoover City Schools. What makes these awards special is that the educators are first nominated by their peers,” Hoover City Schools’ Superintendent of Education Mr. Andy Craig said.
Honorees were all caught off guard Friday as Superintendent Mr. Andy Craig and Assistant Superintendent Mrs. Carol Barber made the rounds with the announcements.
“We have outstanding teachers all throughout Hoover City Schools. These educators represent the best of the best,” Craig said.
“Each recipient was so humble this morning (Friday). So often they feel they don’t deserve it. It’s an honor for us to recognize the work that they do,” Assistant Superintendent Mrs. Carol Barber said. “These educators are all excellent representatives for Hoover City Schools.”
The Alabama Department of Education will announce the state’s “Sweet 16” (sixteen Teacher of the Year finalists from around the state) along with Young Heroes nominees in mid-March, according to Ann Starks with ALSDE. The awards ceremony for Teacher of the Year is scheduled for May 12 in Montgomery. JSU Hall of Fame will announce inductees this spring.
