(SIMMONS) – A Simmons' student, Gracie V., has been offered and accepted the role of Lee Bouvier- Jackie Kennedy's younger sister in Children's Theatre upcoming production of Grey Gardens.

(ROCKY RIDGE/Feb. 8) - January was an exciting month of learning in the first grade classes at Rocky Ridge Elementary! Students in Mrs. Baker's class enjoyed a visit from Miss Annie, who taught them about penguins and polar bears that live in a polar habitat. During the presentation, the students had the opportunity to complete a science experiment about blubber. Each student in Mrs. Baker's class also created a diorama of the polar habitat including icebergs and penguins made of clay. The students are continuing to study animals and plants of other habitats, too, and are learning that different animals are able to get the food, water, air, and shelter that they need in their habitats. The first graders are enjoying writing about what they have learned in their Habitat Learning Logs which they shared with other students and with their parents at the Writing Celebration at Rocky Ridge Elementary on February 1st.

(BUMPUS/Feb. 26) - Coach Donna Boyd invited Hoover High School's Health Science Academy (HSA) to the Health Fair at Bumpus Middle School. There, the HSA students assessed height/weight, did vision screenings, and performed blood pressure checks. The event was "Great! The HSA were exposed to interacting with "patients" in a setting. They received a lot a great experience."
This is the second year for the Health Science Academy at Hoover High School. The Health Science Academy is designed for students that are interested in pursuing a profession in healthcare such as medicine, nursing, physical therapy, pharmacy, radiology technology, nutrition, and other health related professions.
The third year curriculum focuses on diseases and management. Students will be introduced to skills in caring for patients. The students will also learn more about opportunities in the healthcare profession.

(DEER VALLEY/Feb. 18) - Deer Valley Elementary's spring art show was a little different this year. The teachers turned off the lights. All DVES students and their families were invited to Feb. 18th's Art in the Dark. The show spanned the length of the art hallway and had an unusual twist. Before students arrived, all of the hallway lights were switched to black lights, creating a glowing effect among the students' work.
Each student in the school added an element to one of the show's three major themes. Fourth and fifth graders created a massive underwater scene, complete with fish, seaweed, coral, and a variety of other sea creatures. Visitors traveled through space among third grade's astronauts, spaceships, constellations, and aliens. The kindergarten, first, and second graders created a lush jungle filled with exotic birds, lizards, and even a few Wild Things.
Art teachers Christina Collier and Lisa Johnson led students in using a variety of fluorescent media to make sure the art would glow. All artwork was cut out and placed directly into the scenes, which added to the surreal feeling of floating in space and crawling through a jungle. It is always a thrill to see the creativity of Deer Valley's students on full display.

(SHADES MOUNTAIN/Feb. 18) - The opening assembly of SMES' 2010 Multicultural Day included a student-led American Pledge of Allegiance spoken in Romanian and in Spanish, a Middle Eastern Dance by siblings Patrick, Stephen, Elena, Nicholas and Andrew Ritchey, and a Sri Lankan inspired dance by kindergartener Suman Uswatte. The assembly culminated with the Parade of Nations flag parade featuring flags representing the different heritages of the Shades Mountain student body.
Among the other highlights of the day was a performance of "Aztec Dances of Mexico" by the Native American artist, John Jaramillo. Performing in full "warrior-style" dance regalia, he opened his program with a dance and blessing to the four directions followed by a greeting in the Aztec language of Nauatl. In addition to his dances, he gave a brief history of the Aztec people using some Spanish and Aztec terminology. He ended the dance with an opportunity for audience participation inspired by the powwow "two-step" dance from the North American Plains Indians.
The students also enjoyed presentations on Iran, Chile, Eritrea, and Malaysia. They experienced Flamenco dancing, martial arts, learning to eat with chopsticks, and snacks from various cultures.
The successful day was made possible through the help of faculty, staff, and volunteers.

(BERRY) – Berry's yearbook has won an "Honorable Mention" award from publisher Taylor Publishing. A certificate has been issued to the school and the yearbook will be featured in the upcoming Taylor publication, Yearbook Yearbook 2010.
Designed by teacher Lisa Rhinehart and staff, the yearbook is put together largely online and takes months to complete.
"It is a great honor for Berry to be recognized for this achievement. I contribute the success of the yearbook to the outstanding support of the coaches, students, teachers and staff," Lisa Rhinehart said.
(GREEN VALLEY/Feb. 19) - Green Valley 3rd graders were wowed by Worm Farmer John Obert at Careers and Technology Day. Mr. Obert raises the worms to make organic fertilizer. He grows vegetables in the fertilizer and then sells the vegetables to area restaurants.
"Local chefs prefer organic vegetables to those grown in soils that contain chemicals," said Mr. Obert. Mahin Ahsan, in Mrs. Giles'class, says, " Worms are kind of slimy, but they help the world by fertilizing the soil. I love worms!"
