South Shades Crest School opened in August, 1995 serving students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Located in the rapidly growing, family-oriented community of Hoover, Alabama, South Shades Crest presently serves over 715 students.
South Shades Crest is committed to providing an academically challenging, quality education that includes multiple opportunities for students and staff to reach their fullest potential.
Technology is available in two lab settings (traditional and a rolling cart lab) and is also networked into the classrooms. Students publish, develop math projects, use reference software, create projects using Web 2.0 design, and the internet from their classrooms. This technology-rich environment extends into the closed circuit TV lab where students daily direct, film, and broadcast their own TV programs.
Special programs are available for children needing additional help as well as those needing academic enrichment. These programs include learning support, speech, art, music, physical education, Too Good For Drugs, chess, art/music enrichment, jump rope and juggling teams.
Annual schoolwide events include a Spring Fling, Red Ribbon Week, Youth Art Month, and a Career Fair. Special activities include Peer Helpers, Safety Patrol, First Friends, and Schoolyard Square Foot Gardening.
Classes are self contained with a student/staff ratio of about
18 to 1. Two placement options are available : either traditional kindergarten through grade five or placement in a family setting with multi-age groupings for science and social studies for students in K-2.
