HOOVER HIGH SCHOOL – FRESHMAN CAMPUS STUDENT BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS

The following expectations are provided so everyone will understand the behavior that is expected of each student at Hoover High School – Freshman Campus.    We believe the best form of discipline for all people is self-discipline.   We expect students to work hard to obtain the best education possible.   However, we have learned that some students require assistance in making appropriate decisions concerning their conduct.   The teachers and administrators will insure that all students are treated fairly and in a manner that recognizes the dignity of each student.  Each classroom teacher will deal with classroom discipline by taking in-class disciplinary action.  If the misbehavior continues or the disruption is sufficiently severe, the student will be referred to the office.

EXPECTATION 1:  BE WHERE YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE ON TIME.

Lateness to school or class often causes disruption.  Students are responsible for being at school and in the classroom punctually.   Any student absent more than nine (9) days in a semester may not receive credit for the semester's work except in those cases approved by the school administration.  Those approved cases will be primarily limited to student illness verified by a physician's written statement.  Other circumstances resulting in more than nine (9) absences in a semester must be considered on individual merit.  Students who have unexcused absences are not entitled to receive credit for make-up work or to receive credit for tests missed, projects, etc., missed during the absence.  Loss of credit means a grade of zero is assigned.  School days missed as a result of suspension or expulsion are considered unexcused and no make-up work, tests, projects, etc., are required to be given or credit issued.

Students who miss time from school for any type of "skip day" need to understand that such days are unexcused regardless of whether the student has parental permission for such an absence.

  • Students are required to attend all assigned classes.  Truancy will not be tolerated.  Any student who is more than 10 minutes late at the beginning of the day must check in through the Attendance Office.
  • Students must be on time to class.  Students are to be present in the class when the bell rings.  Students must be in class prior to the ringing of the tardy bell.  Students are required to be in the 1st period class by the 8:20 AM bell (7:25 AM bell for zero period).  A warning bell rings at 8:10 AM each morning at which time all students should move to their assigned 1st period class. An accumulation of three (3) tardies to any class will constitute excessive tardies.  The penalty for excessive tardies will escalate with each subsequent tardy.  An accumulation of three (3) tardies in any class is equivalent to an unexcused absence
  • Students must obtain a hall pass to be outside the classroom while classes are in session.
  • Students must stay in the cafeteria during their lunch period unless they receive written permission from an administrator.
  • All visitors to campus must receive a visitor's pass from the office.
  • Students are required to stay on campus during the school day.  All students must leave campus by 3:45 unless they are involved in a school supervised activity.  Students not following this procedure will be subject to disciplinary action.

NOTE:  Parents should call the attendance secretary by 9:00 AM on the day of an absence or check-in with the reason for the absence/check-in.  A note must also be sent to provide written confirmation from the student's parent or guardian with an explanation of the reason and the dates of the absence.  This note must be turned in to the Attendance Office within three days following the absence.  Coding of the absence is not done until this written confirmation is received.  If the School Attendance Office has not been notified of a student's absence by 9:00 AM, attempts will be made to contact the parent to notify them of the absence.

Should the absence of a student exceed five days in a nine (9) week period or an accumulation of 9 days in any one semester, the student will be referred to the District Attendance Officer.

EXPECTATION 2:  BE PREPARED AND ON TASK IN CLASS.

Students shall be prepared for class with books and materials as prescribed by the teacher.  The full use of allotted time improves educational opportunities for everyone.

  • Students will not be allowed to disrupt classes.
  • Students will bring the necessary books and materials to class.
  • Students will use the entire class time for learning.

EXPECTATION 3:  RESPECT THE RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF OTHERS.

Students have a right and a responsibility to learn.  Teachers have a right and a responsibility to teach.  When students cause disruptions, they deprive others of their basic right to learn.

  • Students must show respect for their teachers.  Obscene language, threats, or insubordination will not be tolerated.
  • Students must use appropriate language at all times. Obscene gestures will not be tolerated.
  • Students must not fight.
  • Students must not use or possess any of the following:
    1. Tobacco products, lighters, cigarette papers, etc.
    2. Alcoholic beverages, drugs, or drug paraphernalia.
    3. Obscene or inappropriate materials.
    4. Weapons of any kind, including firearms, knives, martial arts items, brass knuckles, etc.
    5. Fireworks, incendiary, or explosive devices.

Possession is defined as having the prohibited items in the possession of the student on campus.  This includes, but is not limited to, lockers, book bags, and automobiles parked on campus.

NOTE:  A student who takes medicine, prescriptive or proprietary, is required to advise the office staff and to leave any medication in the office and take such medication in the office.

The school principal or authorized official of the school shall suspend any student who is caught selling, giving, or receiving alcohol and/or harmful drugs, including marijuana, to or from others.

The proper law enforcement authority may be called and authorized to file complaint against a student found, possessing, selling, or using alcohol or dangerous drugs, including marijuana.

The principal or authorized official shall immediately notify the parents or guardian of the student.  Care shall be taken to afford due process to all students.

Parental permission to have or use alcohol or drugs, including marijuana, does not exempt a student from this policy.

Students found possessing, using or having used, or under the influence of drugs, including marijuana, alcohol, or any intoxicant are SUBJECT TO EXPULSION

·      Students must respect the property of others.  Theft, extortion, etc. will not be tolerated.

·      Students must not initiate a false alarm (fire alarm, bomb threat, misuse of 911, etc.  Activating the safety shower, eye wash station, or other safety equipment in the science labs without just cause will be considered to be applicable to this offense.

·      Students must not vandalize school property.

·      Students must not threaten other students.

·      Students must not make a public display of affection.  Holding hands, embracing, kissing, or other acts of affection are not permitted on campus.  Parents will be notified if students persist in being too intimate at school.  Failure to comply with this rule may result in disciplinary action.

·      Students must adhere to the dress code.  The dress code applies to all field trips and school-sponsored activities.  Students in violation of the dress code will not be permitted to attend the regular class schedule until the violation has been corrected.  Any class time missed will be considered an unexcused absence.   Dress code violations will lead to disciplinary action.

·       Students must not bring entertainment items (defined in Board policy) to school.

·      Students must not commit acts or otherwise use or possess at school any computer program that may cause interference with other students' use of the computer systems or in any way damage or alter the computer or the system.

EXPECTATION 4:  STRIVE FOR EXCELLENCE.

Excellence in performance is an ideal for which students should strive.  Pride in workmanship is shown when learning tasks are completed successfully.

  • Students are expected to complete assignments on time.
  • Students must be honest in completing tests and assignments.  Cheating, plagiarism, and other forms of dishonesty will not be tolerated.
  • Students are not allowed access to a teacher's grade book or computer files.
