General Information

2009-2010 Bell Schedule

Check-Out and Check-In Procedures

Students are expected to be in class at all times.  Excused check-outs will be allowed in cases of personal illness or verifiable medical appointments.  Other check-outs will be permitted for family emergencies with an administrator's approval.  The following procedures will be followed when a student must leave campus prior to the end of the school day:

  • A parent/guardian or other authorized adult (designated by the parent/guardian on the student's attendance/data card) must come to the school and sign the student out through the attendance office.  Students are not permitted to check out of school with a parental note or telephone call.
  • The student will not be called to the office until the parent or authorized adult arrives at school.  We will not take students out of class to wait in the office for their checkout.
  • Students should limit check outs to emergencies only!  Check outs are counted as an absence from the classes that are missed.

Students must be in class at 8:52 AM (7:54 AM if taking a zero period class).  Students arriving to class between 8:52 – 9:02 (7:54 – 8:04 for zero period students) will be counted tardy by the teacher.  Students arriving after 9:02 AM (8:04 AM) must sign in through the attendance office.  Students signing in will be considered tardy to their first period class.  Excused check-ins will be allowed in cases of personal illness or verifiable medical appointments.  These procedures should be followed when a student checks in late:

  • Students must sign in through the attendance office.
  • The check-in will be counted as excused if the student follows the same procedure as for an excused absence.
  • Students must obtain a check-in pass from the office, which will admit them to class.  If the check-in is unexcused, the student is considered tardy for that class.
  • Students are responsible for making up any class work they miss when checking in late if the check-in is excused.  If the check-in is unexcused, the student is not eligible to complete make-up work.

Visitors

All visitors must report to the Freshman Campus main office before entering any part of the school building.  Upon request, visitors must produce photo identification before the visitor is issued a pass to move to his/her destination.  All visitors should wear passes in a visible location on his/her person.  Passes will not be issued to a student from other schools for campus visitation during school hours.  Any exception will be at the discretion of an administrator.  Unauthorized persons on the Hoover High School campus may be subject to the Alabama trespass law.  Visitor parking is in the front parking lot of the building in the first row.

Medical and Dental Appointments

Parents are encouraged to make medical and dental appointments for students either after school hours or on those days when school is not in session.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

One of the priorities of Hoover High School – Freshman Campus is keeping parents informed of their children's progress and needs.  The school district has scheduled October 5, 2007 for parent conferences.  In addition, if parents wish to talk with their child's teacher at other times, they should call the main office to schedule a conference. Conferences will take place before or after school or during the teacher's planning period.

Telephone and Messages

Students may be permitted to use the office telephone only in cases of illness or absolute necessity as determined by school officials.  Students who use the office telephone must have written permission from their teacher and permission of office personnel.  Students will not be called to the telephone nor will students be called out of class to talk with a parent or other person unless the situation is deemed as an emergency by an administrator.

Naturally there are emergencies which arise from time to time which necessitate a message to or from a parent or the delivery of an item to a student.  The school is happy to cooperate with the delivery of emergency messages, but this becomes very time consuming; therefore, only emergency messages (as determined by an administrator) will be delivered. Parents should have an understanding with their child as to his/her plans for after school since after school arrangements are not considered to be an emergency.

The school will accept no personal deliveries for any student.

Student Activity Card

All students have the opportunity to purchase a pass that will allow them to attend athletic events, dances, plays, and/or any activity requiring an admittance charge at Hoover High School and Hoover High School – Freshman Campus (not including any state play-off games).  The Student Activity Card will also allow students to enter all athletic events at Bumpus and Simmons Middle Schools.  Underclassmen who attend the prom as dates of juniors or seniors will get in free with their own activity cards or will be required to pay $30.  The Student Activity Card allows a student to attend Hoover High School activities at a substantial savings.  Since the Student Activity Card provides admission to activities which would cost the student at least $450 without the activity card, this represents as much as an 85% discount.  The student ID card is coded to indicate that the activity fee has been paid.

Student Money and Valuables

Students should not bring excessive amounts of money to school.  Students should also refrain from bringing valuable items to school.

Fire Alarms

The alarm for a fire drill is a HIGH TONED PIERCING BUZZ.  Directions for fire drills are posted in each classroom.  Students should move quietly, quickly, and calmly, leaving all books behind.  Students should keep a safe distance away from the building until instructed by their teacher.  Students are to remain with their classroom teacher for roll call during the fire drill.

Severe Weather Alarms

The severe weather alarm is a PROLONGED BELL SIGNAL.  Directions for designated areas are posted in every classroom.  Students are to move quickly, quietly, and calmly to the designated area, sit with their backs to the wall, and place their head between their knees.  Students should listen for further instructions from teachers/monitors.

Inclement Weather

In case of inclement weather, please listen to local radio and television stations for school information.  If school must be dismissed early due to bad weather, regular bus routes will be followed unless other information is given by the media.

Accidents

Every accident in the school building, on school grounds, at a practice session, or at any athletic event sponsored by the school must be reported immediately to the person in charge and to the school office.

Lost and Found

All students should safeguard their books, articles of clothing, etc. at all times.  All removable items of clothing, notebooks, etc. should be clearly labeled with the student's name.  The school lost and found area is in the 2nd Floor Office area.  Students are to check with an office worker before searching for items in the lost and found.  Any items that are found should be turned in to the office immediately.

Food and Drink in the Building

Students are not allowed to bring drinks into the building in any type container, including squeeze bottles, glass or plastic bottles or cans except for drinks brought for lunch.  Lunch drinks must remain unopened in the lunch container until the student is in the cafeteria.  After lunch the drinks should either be disposed of or remain in the student's lunch container.  Chewing gum is not allowed at Hoover High School – Freshman Campus.

Care of the Grounds and Building

Every student should have a deep feeling of interest and pride in taking care of our buildings and the school grounds.  Our custodial staff works hard to keep our school clean, but they can't do this work alone.  Student cooperation is needed and expected.  Be careful to make no marks on furniture, equipment, or walls.  Be sure to clean shoes well before entering the building.  Take special care to help keep restrooms clean.  All trash should be thrown into a trash can.  If you see waste paper on the floors or outside the building, please help by picking it up, even if you didn't put it there.  Remember that vandalism to the school building and other school property or to public streets is not an appropriate way to show school spirit and will result in disciplinary action.

School Supplies

Supplies needed at school other than textbooks must be provided by the parent.  This includes paper, pencils, notebooks, workbooks, and other supplies as designated by the teacher.  Students participating in Physical Education or Athletic Training are expected to wear the Hoover High School – Freshman Campus PE uniform.  Students will be provided a list of necessary supplies for each of their classes on the first day of school.

There is an on-campus bookstore operated by the Finance Academy students that will be open daily during 0 period and during lunch.  It will carry basic school supplies as well as PE uniforms on a cash basis. Students should always come to each class with the textbooks and supplies necessary to do all class work as assigned.  Parents can purchase school supplies for students the first day of school at the BUC Stop before school and during lunch.

Hall Passes

The Hall Pass page of the student agenda will be used to grant permission for a student to be out of class.  Students must be in their assigned places unless they have teacher or administrator permission to be in another place.  Students must not leave any class or place of assignment without permission.  Students must not leave school grounds for any purpose without permission from an administrator.  Students who are outside of class during class time must be accompanied by a teacher or have an appropriate hall pass from an authorized staff person.

Announcements and Pledge

Announcements will be made over the television system or intercom during homeroom/ advisement period.  Please remain quiet so that all students can hear the information.  If the Pledge of Allegiance is included in the announcements, students should stand, face the flag, and recite the pledge.  Students who have an objection to participating in the pledge should stand quietly or the student may choose to wait quietly in the hall.  No talking or movement will be allowed during the pledge.  Following morning announcements and the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence will be observed.

Assemblies and Pep Rallies

The assembly will be an important part of the school program.  Seating arrangements will be under the supervision of the principal.  Students are expected to be orderly and courteous in going to and from assemblies as well as during the assembly.  In some cases, students may be given the option of attending a supervised study hall rather than attending the assembly.  Early dismissal in place of assembly attendance is not allowed.  Except for students participating in the assembly, all students are required to meet the regular dress code during an assembly.  When the assembly begins with the Pledge of Allegiance, students should stand, face the flag, and recite the pledge.  Students who have an objection to participating in the pledge should stand quietly.  No talking or movement will be allowed during the pledge.  When the "Star Spangled Banner" or "Alma Mater" is played, students should stand, face the flag, and either sing the appropriate song or remain totally silent.  Anyone who comes to the podium during the assembly must receive full attention.  Appropriate behavior is expected from all students.  Misbehavior may result in removal from the assembly and/or from future assemblies.  Other disciplinary action may also be taken.

Field Trips

Field trips are designed to enrich student learning, provide opportunities for participation in curriculum-related activities, and assist students in reaching educational goals.  Field trips will be monitored and may be disallowed for individual students based on attendance, grades, and behavior.  Also, parents may request that a student not accompany a group.  In this case, the student will follow their normal schedule and complete assignments for the class that is on the field trip.  During such trips, students represent the Hoover City Schools and will act accordingly.  Students will follow school rules and the directions of the teachers/chaperons.  The dress code applies to all field trips.

Any student who accumulates 10 or more absences in a semester will not be eligible to attend field trips and/or co-curricular events which require missing school time.  It is the responsibility of the student to make up all work missed due to field trips or co-curricular events.  Arrangements for make-up work must be made in accordance with school procedures.

Permission to go on school field trips will be allowed or disallowed based upon a student's grades and/or attendance.  Students who are academically or behaviorally at risk may be excluded from school related activities, i.e. field trips, etc.

Courtesies

Please observe rules of courtesy to everyone at all times.  Do not push or shove any person or walk between two people who are talking.  Keep to the right in the halls as you change classes.  Leave doorways and walkways clear so that those entering and leaving the building may do so.  Do not sit on desks or tables.

Checks

Checks may be made payable to Hoover High School – Freshman Campus or Hoover High School – Freshman Campus Lunchroom.  Parents will not be notified if a check is returned for insufficient funds.  All returned checks will now be represented electronically by an outside collection agency.  There will be a $30 processing fee debited from the same account.

Child Nutrition Program returned checks shall be sent to a third party check recovery company. The check recovery company shall draft from the endorser’s account a returned check fee. Checks not collected by the check recovery company shall be returned to the Child Nutrition Program.  A letter shall be sent to the endorser informing them that they have ten (10) days to replace the returned check with cash, money order or certified check.  If payment for returned check has not been received after ten (10) days, a worthless check report shall be filed and forwarded to the office of the assistant Superintendent of Finance for collection. Students or staff who present a check not  collected by the check recovery company shall be required to pay with cash, money order or cashier’s check for all meals and a la carte items the remainder of the school year. Non-public local funds shall be deposited into the Child Nutrition Program fund to cover uncollected bad checks.

Volunteers

Our school encourages parent involvement in the office, in the library, or as classroom guest speakers, etc.  If you are interested in assisting, please call the school, and we will find an area of service that will fit your interests, ability, and time.

Pre-Arranged Absences

Students seeking permission for a pre-arranged absence must secure a form from the Attendance Office, bring a note from his/her parent (detailing the reason for the absence), secure written approval of principal, present the form to each of his/her teachers, have the form signed by the parent, and then submit the form back to the Attendance Office NO LATER THAN THREE DAYS PRIOR TO THE ABSENCE.  Approval or non-approval will be based upon attendance record and/or grades and reason for request.

Athletic Information

The Hoover High School – Freshman Campus athletic program offers a wide variety of options for male and female students.  Athletics denotes team activity, a high degree of competition, and usually a great deal of vigorous exercises.  Athletic games, in all cases, should be played with emphasis on fun, physical development, skill and strategy, social experience, and good sportsmanship.  Students interested in participating should contact the coach, an administrator, or their counselor for specific guidelines and requirements.  A handbook for student-athletes and their parents is available in the school office or may be obtained from any of the coaches.  This handbook contains a great deal of information that is very important for all student-athletes.  Information that is included covers topics such as academic eligibility, attendance eligibility, conduct eligibility, residency requirements, health information, important dates, coaches and telephone numbers, and other important information.  If you are an athlete or a potential athlete, be sure that you have a copy of this handbook and that you and your parents review it thoroughly.

Guidance and Counseling

Counselors at Hoover High School – Freshman Campus will be assigned to specific students and will assist those students with their educational and personal needs.  Students and parents are encouraged to meet with counselors for academic and personal assistance.  Students who need to see their counselor should sign up in the guidance office between class periods.   The counselor will send a pass to them at the appropriate time.  The counseling program provides:

  • Counseling services for students, teachers, and parents.
  • Guidance through both individual and group conferences.
  • Assistance to students in selection of subjects and scheduling classes.
  • Administration of standardized tests and inventories for determining students' aptitudes, abilities, and interests.  Referrals are also made for individual tests.
  • Occupational information, career information, and job assistance.
  • College information, scholarship information, and financial aid information.
  • Coordination of college and career information meetings.
  • Information about armed services, vocational schools, and technical schools.
  • Appropriate assistance to former students.
  • Review of Permanent Record Cards.

Permanent Record Cards are continually audited by the counselors.  Students are advised and counseled about academic deficiencies, and assistance is offered in course selection, summer school plans, and other academic alternatives.  Because each counselor serves so many students, it is the ultimate responsibility of the student and his/her parents to be aware of graduation and promotion requirements.  If there are questions about the student's progress and/or credits, the student's counselor should be contacted.  In addition to the above services, the counselors are available for guidance and counseling in personal and academic matters.  They have extensive resource materials and can make referrals to agencies concerned with mental health, family counseling, drug counseling, health care, etc.

Student Support Services

Students at Hoover High School – Freshman Campus will be supported by a variety of staff members to ensure that each student is meeting his/her potential.  The administrative, intervention, instructional support, and counseling departments will work closely with classroom teachers, parents, and students to assist students.  Parents are encouraged to contact their child’s teachers to determine how these support services could best serve their student.  Students may also request assistance by contacting their teachers or their counselor.

Students may participate in or be asked to participate in teacher-led tutoring during the lunch period.  Students must sign up in the designated location by the beginning of 4th period each day to participate in lunch tutoring.  “Grab and go” lunches will be available for students participating in lunch tutoring.

Student Records

All information regarding students and their families shall be collected, maintained, and disseminated under the safeguards identified by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974.  Parents have the right to see and make a copy of their children's education records subject to the following guidelines:

  • The school shall be notified, in writing, at least five days prior to the proposed date for parent review.
  • "Education records" refers to those records that are maintained in the student's cumulative record file or in the individual education plan (I.E.P.) file.
  • A notation shall be entered into the student's record when a parent has reviewed and/or made copies of student records.
  • Records may not be removed from the school building.
  • An administrator, counselor, or an Instructional Support teacher will be present during the review of the records and will explain the information contained in the cumulative record folder to the parent.
  • Copies of transcripts will be sent to a requesting transfer school following Alabama state law.
  • Transcripts will be sent to post-secondary schools or other institutions with the written consent of the student and/or student's parent.

School Transportation

Students at the Freshman Campus are encouraged to ride the bus when possible.  Please refer to the Student Handbook for bus expectations and procedures.  Buses will pick-up and drop-off on the West side of the Freshman Campus.  Students are expected to unload and board the buses quickly and orderly.  Bus routes will be posted near the front entrance and near the cafeteria through August 18, 2007.

Parents who choose to bring and pick-up their students by car are encouraged to carpool when possible.  Cars will be directed around the parking lot on the East side of the building and will drop-off and pick-up students under the awning.  Cars will enter the parking lot in the left lane, will exit in the right lane of the school entrance, and will get in the left lane of Fleming Parkway.  Buses will travel in the right lane and will enter and exit on the West side of the building.  Cars should not enter through this entrance.  Parents that need to park and enter the building during student pick-up or drop-off will need to park in the East parking lot and enter the building through the front entrance.

Students participating in activities meeting at the Senior Campus in the afternoon will be shuttled from the Freshman Campus to the Senior Campus.  The shuttle bus will be the last bus in the bus pick-up line and will leave the Freshman Campus at approximately 3:45 PM.  Students should be picked up by their parent at the conclusion of their afterschool activity at the Senior Campus.

Students at the Freshman Campus are not allowed to drive to school and park on school property. Freshmen who park on any Hoover City Schools’ property during regular school hours will lose their parking privileges for 9 weeks the following school year. (This is 9 weeks per violation)

Textbooks

All textbooks issued by the school are the property of the State and the Hoover Board of Education.  The student's name and year will be written in the state stamp.  No other writing should be done in or on nonconsumable textbooks.  It is the student's responsibility to keep up with his/her books.  Lost or damaged books must be paid for; prices may be obtained in the office.  Textbooks that have been paid for and are later located by the student should be turned in to the office.  Refunds will be made if the book is returned within two weeks of payment.

Lockers

Personal lockers are provided for storage of books, notebooks, and lunches.  They are not intended for storage of money or other valuable items.  Lockers are provided for student convenience, and the student, not the school, is responsible for items lost or stolen from them.  Students must keep their lockers locked, not inform other students of their combination, and not make marks on locks to indicate the combination.  Broken or inoperative lockers are to be reported to the office.  To change lockers, approval must be secured from the office.  No stickers, decals, etc. may be placed on the outside of lockers.  Only items that are easily removable without damage to the locker may be placed on the inside. Students will be responsible for paying for any damage they do to their locker or to any other locker.  Locker maintenance fee is $5.00 per year.

School lockers are the property of Hoover City Schools.  At no time does the Hoover school district relinquish its exclusive control of lockers provided for the convenience of students.  School authorities for any reason may conduct periodic general inspections of lockers at any time, without notice, without student consent, and without a search warrant.  Band, physical education, and athletic lockers are also available for student use.  The same rules as above apply to lockers in those areas.

To standardize emergency care, the information provided by the parent/guardian on the Student Health Room Information Card will be held confidential.  Faculty, staff, and local emergency personnel will be advised of this information on a need-to-know basis.  In the event your child requires an emergency transport to a health care facility, all efforts will be made to honor parental choice.

Emergency Events

In the unlikely event that an emergency evacuation should occur at this school, the school system superintendent or designee will notify media of all evacuation information.

Cafeteria

The school lunch period is an opportunity for students to enjoy nutritious meals while socializing with their friends.  Our child nutrition staff works to provide a nutritious, well-balanced meal for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.  Student lunches are $1.75 with a variety of a la carte options available.  The lunch period is a definite part of the school program, and provision should be made for all students to eat lunch in the cafeteria.  Any deviation from this must be by special permission from the principal.  Parents and other visitors may not bring lunch to a student from a cafeteria or fast food restaurant during lunch period at school. The cafeteria should be a place where everyone can enjoy his/her meal in pleasant surroundings.

Some simple rules of courteous behavior should be observed.

  • Move quickly and quietly to the cafeteria during the assigned lunch period;
  • Enter the cafeteria only during the assigned lunch period;

The principal may elect to establish a discretionary fund to pay for students not having lunch money. Non public local school funds shall be deposited into the Child Nutrition Program fund to cover uncollected charged meals.

Parents may pay for student lunches on-line.  Information will be sent home with each student during the first week of school on the specifics of how to pay lunch accounts on-line.  Parents may continue to send checks/cash with students for lunch expenses.

Student Activities

Hoover High School – Freshman Campus offers a comprehensive co-curricular activities program designed to provide opportunities for academic and social growth.  Through participation in co-curricular activities, students develop an appreciation for teamwork, sportsmanship, competition, self-discipline, and citizenship.  Co-curricular activities increase a student's personal development and self-esteem.  Students should examine available organizations, clubs, and teams and select activities that are of interest to them.  Students are encouraged to support all co-curricular activities, scholastic competitions, dramatic and musical performances, and other scheduled events.

Students will be given information regarding the specific clubs and organizations that he/she can elect to participate in during the first month of school.  Clubs at the Freshman Campus will meet during Advisory/Homeroom.  Students participating in a club will be given a listing of meeting dates and applicable fees in their first club meeting.  Clubs are divided into three basic types: academically-oriented, service-oriented, and special interest groups.  All students are encouraged to choose a club and get involved in school and community activities.  Clubs will meet at both the Senior Campus and the Freshman Campus.

Community Service

Students are encouraged to participate in community service projects.  Students who complete 80 hours of community service earn a school letter.  Students should see their counselor for additional information about this program.

Fund Raising

The principal or his designee must approve, IN ADVANCE, all fund raising activities by any teams, clubs, or other school-sponsored organizations.  Students who are involved with the selling of products for clubs, etc. are to sell BEFORE OR AFTER SCHOOL ONLY.  Tickets for activities are to be sold in the cafeteria during lunch period.  Only school-sponsored fund raising activities will be allowed on the Hoover campus.  Organizations must file a Fund Raising Application with the principal BEFORE ordering any materials for a fund raising project.
