Student Medication

Students should never have any medications in purses, backpacks, lunch boxes, etc.  Failure to comply with this policy could result in suspension, alternative school placement, or expulsion.

In an effort to keep all our students and staff healthy this flu season, please remember that students should not return to school until they are fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medications.

In order for the school nurse to administer medications during school hours, you must follow the guidelines below.

  • All medications must be provided and delivered by the parent or guardian to the school nurse/health room.  This includes prescription and over the counter medications such as Tylenol, Advil, cortisone creams, triple antibiotic ointments and/or creams, Benadryl, cough medicines, etc.  Students should never have any medications in purses, backpacks, lunch boxes, etc.
  • All medications must be in the original sealed container from the manufacturer or pharmacy, labeled with student’s name, medication name, dose of medication, times to be administered, pharmacy name, prescriber’s name and current date.
  • All Prescription medications to be given at school require written authorization from the parent and the health care provider (physician, dentist, nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant).
  • All over the counter medications to be given at school for longer than 10 consecutive days require written authorization from the parent and the health care provider (physician, dentist, nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant).  This authorization must be renewed each new school year and does not carry over from one year to the next.  The authorization expires July 1 each year.
  • Temporary over the counter medication (medication that will start and finish within 10 calendar days from the date the form and medication are received) does not require the physician’s signature. However, the parents must still submit the form entitled School Medication Prescriber/Parent Authorization. Any medication remaining in the health room over 2 weeks past the 10 day period without a physician’s signature will be discarded.
  • All medications must be given by a licensed nurse or a medication assistant who has successfully completed a course curriculum and is registered with the Alabama Board of Nursing.
  • School Medication Prescriber/ Parent Authorization forms may be faxed to us.  The fax number  is 205-439-1601.

Restrictive Injury or Illness:

If your child is returning to school with an injury or illnes that restricts movement or activity, please notifiy the health room.  There are things that can be done to accommodate students during their time of recovery to make it easier during school.  The Freshman Campus has an elevator.  The elevator is restricted to only students that get a pass from the nurse.  If your child needs a pass please feel free to contact the health room.

Wheel chairs and crutches cannot be supplied for students.  Those assistive devices must be arranged through your physician's office.  Most health insurance plans will cover the cost of that equipment if your doctor feels it is neccessary.

Medical Preparedness:

To standardize emergency care, the information provided by the parent/guardian on the Student Health Room Information Card will be held confidential.  Faculty, staff, and local emergency personnel will be advised of this information on a need-to-know basis.  In the event your child requires an emergency transport to a health care facility, all efforts will be made to honor parental choice.
